Via the AP: Gates makes unannounced visit to Iraq

Defense Secretary Robert Gates is using his latest unannounced trip to Iraq to assess whether the downturn in violence in parts of the country can be sustained, and whether Iran is working to quell the shipment of arms into Iraq, officials said Wednesday as the Pentagon chief made his sixth visit to the country.

The fact that visits by major administration officials to Iraq continue to have to be on the sly does not bespeak well of the security situation, even with recent improvements.

    1. Its taking me a long time to get used to the new SecDef.

Whenever I see headlines like, “Gates to go to Baghdad,” my first thought is “why the hell is Bill Gates going THERE”???

    2. And those visits are almost certainly to US bases (including the Green zone).
