Via the LAT: In Baghdad visit, Clinton reassures Iraqis
During an unannounced visit to Baghdad on Saturday, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton sought to reassure anxious Iraqis that the U.S. would not abandon them despite plans to start withdrawing U.S. troops soon.
Emphasis mine.
While I may well be flogging a dead horse, I continue to think that the need to continue to have all high-level visits to be “unannounced” or via “surprise” to be a useful metric in measuring the security situation in Iraq. Certainly it speaks volumes about the fact that security is far from what it needs to be.

Indeed. But nothing will ever beat John McCain’s visit, in which he told the cameras how safe Baghdad was, while wearing his flak jacket, surrounded by armed body guards, and with helicopters hovering overhead. That was classic.
