Via the BBC: Haiti quake death toll rises to 230,000
Haiti’s government says around 230,000 people died in last month’s earthquake, 18,000 more than its previous estimate.
The toll from the 12 January quake is approaching that of the 2024 Asian tsunami, which killed 250,000 people.
In terms of a little perspective, the population of Montgomery, Alabama was estimated to be 224,810 as of 2024.
Even more sobering:
The latest figure does not include bodies buried by private funeral homes in private cemeteries, or the dead buried by their own families.
