squirrels are just about the worst fruit-eating pest.
Anything you can do to attract hawks and owls will help. We have a hawk that has taken up residence, and I saw it chomping on a squirrel the other day. Very encouraging, though I need a few hundred hawks to get things under control!

I have had years in which my meager fruit crop was entirely stolen by the squirrels!
