Via the BBC: Bolivia on edge for crucial vote

Legislators in Bolivia are due to meet later on Thursday in Sucre to decide whether to accept the resignation of President Carlos Mesa.

They may call early polls to calm recent violent protests that have been taking place in the main city, La Paz.

Congress will also debate whether Mr Mesa should be replaced by Senate Speaker Hormando Vaca Diez.

President Mesa, who offered to resign on Monday, has warned the mounting unrest could spark civil war.

He has asked Argentina, Brazil and the United Nations to send observers to the country.

The opposition leader and presidential hopeful Evo Morales has warned that bloodshed will follow if Congress confers the presidency on Mr Vaca Diez, as the constitution requires.

[...]Mr Mesa, who came to power 19 months ago after his predecessor was forced out by similar protests over energy, announced his resignation in a televised address on Monday after a day of mass protests.
