Via CNN: Roberts nomination advances. The vote was 13-5:
Five Democrats — Sens. Dianne Feinstein of California, Joseph Biden of Delaware, Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, Charles Schumer of New York and Dick Durbin of Illinois — opposed Roberts.
Well, I was wrong about Schumer and Feinstein.
Leahy, Kohl (Wisconsin) and Feingold (Wisconsin) voted for Roberts.
It would appear that Roberts is on a clear path to confirmation in time for the opening of the SC:
Sens. Tim Johnson of South Dakota and Max Baucus of Montana announced their support for Roberts.Sens. Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Mary Landrieu of Louisiana indicated they were leaning toward voting for the nominee. Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota was viewed as a possible vote for him, as well.
Roberts is “very well credentialed,” Landrieu said Wednesday.
Sadly, only three committee members chose not to follow Schumer’s mythological “answer every quetion to my satisfaction strategy,” and declined the opportunity to join Chairman Dean’s and Senator Reid’s obstructionism.

If the Dems vote en masse against him, they’ll be cutting their own throats politically for the next nominee. Apart from any other consideration, surely that fact - grounded in pure politics - will carry the day?

I had that pegged except I had Feinstein going yes and Feingold going no, guess I just got my “Feins” mixed up. Also contrary to popular belief, this will not hurt the democrats in the fight over the next nominee.

I think a mixed vote will not hurt them and don’t know about popular belief, but if you mean my opinion above, my point was the “en masse” thing. A massive “no” vote from the Dems, as opposed to a mixed bag — would (IMO) weaken their position for the next cadidate.
