Professor Bill Stewart of Alabama summarized the race for the governor’s office in today’s Huntsville Times:

“Baxley hasn’t been able to give us a reason as to why we should throw out the incumbent,” the professor said. “She’s trying to put him down without putting forth her own program. But unemployment is low, the governor has handled natural disasters well, and the state is presenting a good image.

“It would be tough for any candidate to combat that.”

Specifically, Stewart categorized Baxley’s flaws as not campaigning vigorously enough, not ingratiating herself to reporters, and getting upset whenever something negative is said about her.

“She takes it too personally,” Stewart said. “That’s her privilege, but it wrecks public relations.”

Stewart said even with the demands of being governor, Riley has been a heartier campaigner, regardless of how well he’s doing in the polls.

This all strikes me as quite accurate. Indeed, I noted Baxley’s problems back during the primary season in a column in the Press-Register.

    1. What gets me with Baxley’s campaign adds it that she is attacking Riley for raising taxes and saying that she will lower them. I have to ask myself, who is the Democrat in this race? Answer: I’m not sure there is one.
