Via the Washington Examiner: Some mull idea of Sen. Bill Clinton:

If Hillary Rodham Clinton wins the presidency, some top Democrats would like to see her husband, former President Bill Clinton, appointed to serve out Hillary’s unexpired Senate term.

“As a senator, he’d be a knockout,” said Harold Ickes, who was once a top White House aide to Bill Clinton and now gives behind-the-scenes advice to Hillary. “He knows issues, he loves public policy and he’s a good politician.”

Some Democrats and political analysts say Bill Clinton would thrive in the world’s greatest deliberative body, much like Lyndon Johnson did before he became president.

I just don’t see it.  Even though being a Senator is a real job and being ex-President isn’t (so to speak), I still would argue it is a demotion.  Who would want to go from being “Mr. President” to “Senator”?

    1. Does anyone know if Uncle Bill can run for president again? Can an American serve two consecutive terms — twice, if they (the 8-year terms) are not consecutive? If Bill Clinton announces his Canadacy after Newt Gingrich announces he’s running, it wouldn’t be like he was running three consecutive (4 year) terms.

      Uncle Bill for Prez 2026!

    2. He’s tapped out: the most you can have is the two terms.

    3. John Qunicy Adams went on to be a long time member of the House (heck, he died on the floor of the House if I remember correctly). However, that was a different era with a different view of the Presidency and of Congress.

    4. This is really quite a silly “news” story.

First of all, the likelihood that Hillary will be even the Democratic nominee is still a year from being resolved.

Ive never heard of this “Washington Examiner”. Is it a legitimate source?

    5. Who would want to go from being “Mr. President” to “Senator”?

Fernando Collor de Melo and Jose Sarney, to name two.

Of course, this isn’t Brazil. But why not? Why shouldn’t ex-presidents continue (or resume) careers in electoral politics? Seems we could benefit from their experience.

As for Clinton, this is not the first time the idea has been publicly broached.

    6. I think it would be a great idea to have Bill officially back in Washington again. Why not be a senator, he could probably stay in that position for life if he wanted to.

Would he have to give up being called “Mr. President” if he became a senator? And like you say, it’s not like being a former president is really a job. What power does it give him? None as far as I can see.
