More extrodinary is the general misleading idea that you find all the time in media reports about “high” prices.
While what constitutes “high” is objective, when you see historical data that is adjusted for inflation, you see that prices now are nowhere near “record levels.”
They are likely to reach record levels in the near future given the fact that supplies are limited in the face of increasing demand, but right now prices are not “high” historically speaking.
What has happened is that people got used to artificially low prices, made stupid purchases–like the Lincoln Navigator–and local officials have continued to pursue energy-inefficient land use policies. The lack of a sensible federal transportation policy also doesn’t help matters.
