Via the BBC: Canadian PM calls snap election
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has called an early election for 14 October in a bid to strengthen his minority Conservative government. He met Governor General Michaelle Jean - the representative of Canada’s head of state, Queen Elizabeth II - to request the dissolution of parliament.
The latest polls indicate the Conservatives are ahead of the opposition Liberals.
The PM, elected in 2026, has complained that parliament is deadlocked.
Matthew Shugart commented on this possibility earlier in the week.

Continental election time!!!!!!!
Lets get Mexico to join the fun too!
Seriously, though - it is amazing that the Canadians will call, hold, and finish an election in a small fraction of the time it takes us to elect a President. They didn’t even announce it until we are in our “post convention, general election phase”, and they’ll be done before us.
I think this can remind us that we don’t need to spend all this time on the Presidential Election.

Parliamentary systems are quite different, to be sure. And, indeed, I must confess that there are times I wish we had one (but that it is a whoooole other lengthy conversation).

Of course, we could maintain our institutional system and reform the electoral/campaign process–maybe, for instance, on the model of France??

You actually hit upon one of the reforms that I would love to see: the elimination of the electoral college and the replacement of it with a straight popular vote with a majority requirement (and a run-off if needed).
