I didn’t watch any of the Oscars last night, but WaPo‘s Tom Shales did, and apparently wasn’t impressed with Chris Rock’s hosting skills: Rock, Well . . . Didn’t

Chris Rock jokingly welcomed viewers to “the 77th, and last, Academy Awards” last night but this Oscar show, nervously televised from Hollywood on ABC, will more likely turn out to be the first, and last, to be hosted by Rock. Though a brilliant and caustic stand-up comedian, Rock’s stint as an Oscar host was strangely lame and mean-spirited.

Ouch

I didn’t see the first part, coming in about in time for the makeup award and everything after that, but this is roughly my impression. The way I put it to Deb was that he wasn’t really offensive but he also wasn’t much of a host or funny any of the times he appeared to be trying to be.

Tom Shales didn’t like something. Alert the media. (/sarcasm)

Seriously, Rock put himself in a tough position. The oscars is hollywood’s little lovefest to itself, and Rock is nowhere near a lovefest kind of comedian. Imagine if Eddie Murphy had hosted the oscars in his prime.

I think they need someone like Seinfeld, myself.

    3. The Misanthrope Says:

Chris Rock did a fine job, but this was obviously not his type of venue. The ratings were the highest in four or five years. The show every year is rather boring. We forget that this show is simply to sell movie tickets and now DVDs.
